Christine Olmstead Solo-Exhibition
(Washington DC) Latela Art Gallery is proud to host the solo exhibition of established local artist Christine Olmstead entitled The Divide. The exhibition features a series of paintings which celebrate life and death, seeking beauty in both places, and finding peace between the two. As a response to losing four family members and a close friend to sudden deaths over the past two and a half years, Christine has explored emotional acceptance and closure through her painting practice. This series in particular includes artworks created during the last few years as these events unfolded and affected her life. As a professional artist who frequently accepts commissions, this series is personal in that each artwork reflects unique and fragile moments of healing, whereas other paintings created in the same period of Christine’s life remained disconnected from this larger emotional story.
Christine has interpreted her painting practice to be one that not only has helped her cope with her grief but also to serve as a reminder of the value and simple beauties of life: an emotion that she hopes her paintings also present. In her Exhibition Statement, she shares: “My hope is that as you experience these works you dig a little further, hug a little tighter, breathe a little deeper, and spread life more abundantly.”
